Saws

Peter Sefton’s tool shop started when Peter’s students reviewed ten of the best saws from around the world. The clear winners were Sheffield’s Thomas Flinn Pax 1776 saws which are still hand filed and made to order the traditional way, along with the exceptional value über-styled Veritas for those who prefer a lighter saw to use. We have the experience to guide you through your choice of dovetail or tenon saws in either rip or crosscut tooth patterns.

Dovetail Saws5

Although similar to a tenon saw, dovetail saws generally have thinner blades with a greater number of teeth per inch. Dovetail saws are primarily used for work that require small, very precise cuts, typically in joint making including dovetail and small tenon joints. Available in both rip and cross cut configurations our range of saws from Thomas Flinn, Pax and Veritas are some of the best we have tested.

Flush Cut Saws5

A flush cut saw is generally used to cut off exposed dowels, rods and tenons. This type of saw has a flexible blade and teeth that only cut on the pull stroke. Available from Thomas Flinn Pax in a single sided blade or from Veritas as a double-edged set saw.

Flush Cut Saws
Japanese Saws5

Unlike most European saws that cut on the push stroke, Japanese saws are the best known for cutting on the pull stroke.  Generally known for being used in Japanese woodworking but they are also used a lot in Asian and Middle Eastern countries. Our stock from Tajima features a Japanese pull stroke blade with a European style pistol grip handle.

Tenon Saws7

As the name suggests tenon saws are commonly used to make the tenons used in mortise and tenon joints. These saws can be used on hard and soft woods. As standard a tenon saw will have between 10 and 15 teeth per inch and be available in rip or crosscut tooth configuration. Our range of Thomas Flinn Pax and Veritas have a saw to suit all requirements.
