Narex 8112 Mortice Chisel - 8mm

by Narex

Narex mortice chisels are accurate, hard and immensely tough. Used for material removal as well as cutting mortice joints. The sides taper in height and length from tip to shoulder resulting in excellent cutting performance.

The blade is forged from Chrome Manganese (Cr-Mn) steel and heat treated up to 59 HRc (Rockwell Hardness Scale). The Chrome Manganese (Cr-Mn) steel used in Narex chisels is a low-alloy high-carbon steel developed specifically for making edge tools using the isothermal hardening method. This produces very strong chisels with edge taking and holding properties similar to carbon steel tools. Grind at 25 and hone at 35 degrees. Honing angles can be adjusted to suit your needs - a little steeper for greater edge durability or a little shallower for easier cutting.

The ergonomic handle is made from stained beech with a chrome steel ferrule, strong enough to withstand heavy blows from a mallet.

Chisel comes supplied with a chisel edge guard.

Blade length: 149mm
Total Length: 304mm
Handle Size: 155 x 46mm

Nice bench chisel

I bought this to cover a gap in my chisel collection and it’s a very useful size for the projects I tend to favour. I like the steel which is durable and will take a good edge. I like the handle which is large by comparison to my Axminster Rider chisels and it fits well in the hand.

The downsides are that the tough and durable steel does take a bit of work to get sharp. The other downside is that the bevel does not extend all the way to the edge and there is a narrow flat edge all the way to the cutting edge and this can get in the way when working into the corners of dovetails etc.

Overall it’s a nice tool and I’m glad to have it In my collection.

Narex Chisels

I purchased 3 different sizes of these chisels, they arrived the following day and I am pleased they are as advertised. They need to be properly sharpened for purpose once unpacked, but I expect them to perform well from what I see.

Great Value

Really nice and well made chisel, worked well straight out of the box and required very little additional tune up. Chopped 4 mortices in 2” oak no problem, really like the narex brand, quality and a decent price. Will be getting more to complete the set.
Thanks as always for the great service and quality selection of tools on offer from the woodworkers workshop.
