Pax - 1776 Dovetail Saw (Pear Handle) - Rip 10in 20 tpi
The Pear Pax 1776 Saw was inspired by Peter and is made exclusively for him by Thomas Flinn
Swiss Pear along with other fruit woods has always been used for the finest quality saw handles and Peter felt that such a fine hand-made saw deserved a fine handle to match. The Pax 1776 was voted the best saw by Peter's professional long course students back in 2011 and now it just got better! This flagship saw is made with a heavily folded brass back, stamped with "Pax 1776 Sheffield England" and it is made today to the same high standards that were used two hundred years ago. The folded brass back means the blade is held under tension offering excellent rigidity and balance. The weight of the brass back aids the fine cutting ability of this saw. The traditional open handle is made from Swiss Pear chosen for its close grain and is hand finished with Danish Oil to offer perfect comfort and grip. This saw is the ultimate in beauty and also in its unrivalled performance. Each saw is hand-filed, with a new file every time, before it is tested, marked as "Inspired by Peter Sefton" and despatched.
Have tried a variety of back saws, from antique to the modern Veritas kind but keep coming back to a traditional back saw. The combination of the weight, pistol grip and excellent saw plate just made this feel like it was an extension of my arm. Very quickly I was getting cuts started without skipping and cutting straighter with less effort.
This is well worth the investment for a saw that will last you a lifetime.
This saw is an absolute dream to use. The Peter Sefton influenced handle design is far the best handle I have used. I have trialled other dovetail saws from the range on this website such as Veritas and Dorchester but I feel the weight and pistol grip handle on the PAX model is by far the most enjoyable to use. Very well made and the pear handle looks fantastic. The handle is oil treated so coating it now and again or sealing it will help prevent any tannin staining the handle. Most enjoyable saw to use!
