Veritas - Marking Gauge - Dual MarkingVERDUAMRKGAU
Veritas - Marking Gauge - Dual Marking features two independently adjustable rods, which mean this gauge can scribe both sides of a mortice at once. The length of each ground stainless-steel rod is very precise.
By registering the tails against either side of a chisel, you can set the cutters to span the exact width of the chisel blade.
Projection is easy to set, an internal O-ring keeps light but constant friction on each rod; a thumbscrew locks the setting. One rod has its cutting edge at the extreme end of the rod, making it useful for transferring dimensions or as a depth gauge.
As with all Veritas marking gauges, the wheel cutters avoid the problems of wandering that can occur with pin-style marking gauges. They cut wood fibres rather than tear them and they mark cleanly, even on cross grain.
These hardened steel wheel cutters scribe perfectly at any point of their circumference. They are oriented with the cutting bevels facing in opposite directions, so you can always mark your line with the bevel facing the waste side of any cut. Each cutter is fully retractable for safe storage or to permit use with a single cutter.
The rods project off-centre from the anodized aluminium body, which helps the gauge resist rolling on a workbench and maximises the area of the 50mm diameter brass face that can register against the work piece. 190mm overall, the gauge has a setting range from zero to 145mm.
The aluminium housing has a brass face and the rods are stainless steel.
Made in Canada.
I've seen these things on many woodwork suppliers' sites and thought they looked nice but a bit gimmicky, but doing a bit more reading sold ito me. I was going to buy a good alde fashionde Marples style wooden marking guage but then I remembered how wobbly they can be and how the woodgrain can pull the marking points off track. That doesn't happen with this.
Light easy to set up and use and the cutting discs retract into a recess in the brass part when you're not using it and it doesn't roll around on the bench because of the offset beams.
Typical Veritas high quality. The clincher for me, it's the same price as a wooden marking gauge.
Delivered promptly and was immediately taken with the quality of this product. Excellent in use and good instructions provided.
Really solid piece of kit. The weight is good without being too heavy and the brass fence is big enough to give you the confidence you're referencing the face well. The cutting wheels are very sharp and make short work of even the hardest timber, only con is that it can be hard to see how close you are to your end point but you learn through use when to stop. You should take some time to play around with the tool as it can take a few goes to get used to it.
One other thing, you do need the shaft clamp to make certain you maintain your measurements for multiple marking situations.
