Description

Get Better Results From Your Jointer

A jointer can only produce consistently flat, square timber when the machine itself is correctly set up. The relationship between the beds, cutter block and fence, together with correctly set blades, all influence the quality and accuracy of the finished surface saving hours of handwork.

In this course, Peter Sefton takes you through the process of setting up and maintaining a jointer correctly, helping you understand how each adjustment affects the timber you produce and how to keep your machine performing at its best.

Set Up and Maintain Your Jointer Correctly

Peter explains how to check and set the relationship between the jointer beds and cutter block before looking at the different cutting systems available, including traditional HSS knives, quick-change Cobalt knives and TCT spiral cutter blocks.

You'll learn how to recognise when blades are becoming blunt and how to sharpen them without removal, how to change and correctly set blades, understand the effect of feed speed on cutting quality and maintain the machine for reliable performance. Peter also explains the causes of common problems including snipe and taper cuts how correct machine setup can help you avoid them.

Why Learn from Peter Sefton?

Peter Sefton is a Master Craftsman and furniture maker with more than 40 years of woodworking experience. He spent over 20 years teaching and mentoring hundreds of students through his renowned furniture school, where machine techniques and safe, accurate working practices formed an important part of his teaching.

This course brings that same practical approach directly to your workshop. Peter explains not only how to carry out each technique, but why it works, drawing on decades of experience using woodworking machinery and teaching others how to get reliable results from their equipment.

Clear and thorough - but for one job

I bought this to help reset my planer after the beds had come out of alignment. Peter’s delivery is clear and deliberate. My only disappointment was that the job of getting the beds coplanar is one to be outsourced to an engineer- the one job I wanted help with! Luckily I got it done in a couple of hours.

Thoroughly detailed information

Needed to check and reset my Hammer planer after moving it into my new workshop. This video provided very detailed information on how to get the best from it. Might do the same for my bandsaw now!

Confidence at last

This video has given me the confidence to tackle changing the knives in my planer/thicknesser - something I'd been putting off for far too long. Peter's clear instructions and demonstrations take the mystique out of the operation. Just like hand-planes, powered planers can be a delight or a nightmare according to how sharp and well set up they are, but I've always found the prospect of maintenance work on a planer much more intimidating than on a bandsaw - for a start the latter only has one table, not two that have to be aligned every direction! Now, I can at least tackle changing the knives and maybe run a few more checks while I'm at it. Hobby woodworkers like me have a surprising amount in common with the professionals: we all want to be getting on with the woodworking, rather than wasting time and temper struggling to get by with poor kit - hand or machine. With this and the bandsaw videos I can now ensure that the two most essential machines in my 'shop are giving the best service they can.
