Description

Get More From Your Jointer

A jointer is fundamental to accurate timber preparation, but good results depend on more than simply passing timber across the cutter block. How you assess the board, read the grain and control the timber as it passes over the machine all affect the accuracy and quality of the finished surface.

In this course, Peter Sefton demonstrates the practical techniques he uses to prepare timber safely and accurately, from large, twisted boards through to thin and delicate work. You'll learn how to establish a flat face side and square edge, giving you accurately prepared timber ready for the next stage of machining.

Practical Techniques for Safe, Accurate Jointing

Peter explains how hand pressure and feed speed affect the cut and how to work with grain direction, including more difficult interlocking grain, to achieve cleaner results.

You'll learn practical methods for removing twist and cup, planing timber to width and working safely with large, short and thin material using appropriate push blocks and techniques. Peter also explains how cutter wear can affect the finished surface, helping you recognise when the machine rather than your technique may be influencing the result.

Why Learn from Peter Sefton?

Peter Sefton is a Master Craftsman and furniture maker with more than 40 years of woodworking experience. He spent over 20 years teaching and mentoring hundreds of students through his renowned furniture school, where timber preparation and safe, accurate machine techniques formed an important part of his teaching.

This course brings that same practical approach directly to your workshop. Peter explains not only how to carry out each technique, but why it matters, drawing on decades of experience preparing timber and teaching others how to use woodworking machinery safely and effectively.

Clear and thorough - but for one job

I bought this to help reset my planer after the beds had come out of alignment. Peter’s delivery is clear and deliberate. My only disappointment was that the job of getting the beds coplanar is one to be outsourced to an engineer- the one job I wanted help with! Luckily I got it done in a couple of hours.

Thoroughly detailed information

Needed to check and reset my Hammer planer after moving it into my new workshop. This video provided very detailed information on how to get the best from it. Might do the same for my bandsaw now!

Confidence at last

This video has given me the confidence to tackle changing the knives in my planer/thicknesser - something I'd been putting off for far too long. Peter's clear instructions and demonstrations take the mystique out of the operation. Just like hand-planes, powered planers can be a delight or a nightmare according to how sharp and well set up they are, but I've always found the prospect of maintenance work on a planer much more intimidating than on a bandsaw - for a start the latter only has one table, not two that have to be aligned every direction! Now, I can at least tackle changing the knives and maybe run a few more checks while I'm at it. Hobby woodworkers like me have a surprising amount in common with the professionals: we all want to be getting on with the woodworking, rather than wasting time and temper struggling to get by with poor kit - hand or machine. With this and the bandsaw videos I can now ensure that the two most essential machines in my 'shop are giving the best service they can.
