Create storage around the way you work

Forstner bits can take up a surprising amount of useful drawer and bench space, particularly once the set begins to grow. These Rockler inserts let you make a simple custom rack in a wall panel, drawer, shelf or cabinet, so the bits can be organised in the workshop without committing to a bulky proprietary holder.

For wall storage, the insert grips the shank firmly enough to keep the bit secure in a vertical position, while the same insert works just as well for horizontal storage in a drawer or on a shelf. Keeping the bits separated also makes sizes easier to identify and, in a wall-mounted rack, avoids the pockets of dust that often collect around loose bits in a tray.

One insert for two common shank sizes

Each insert has a stepped internal bore that accepts both 8mm (5/16") and 10mm (3/8") Forstner bit shanks. That gives you useful flexibility when arranging a mixed collection and means the layout can be changed later without needing a different insert for each size.

Installation is straightforward: drill a 1/2" diameter hole to a minimum depth of 3/4" and press the insert into place. The ribbed exterior helps it grip the timber securely when the bit is removed, while the moulded polyethylene provides a durable contact surface around the shank and helps reduce moisture contact that could contribute to rust.

For larger shanks

For the less common 1/2" shank Forstner bits, Rockler recommends its Router Bit Storage Inserts, sold separately. This 10-pack is intended specifically for 5/16" and 3/8" shanks.
