Description

At the heart of the Woodpeckers 300mm Stainless Steel Square is the design of its one-piece core. This square isn’t determined by pins, rivets, screws or spot-welds like it is in many other squares on the market. It's determined by Woodpeckers state-of-the-art CNC milling centres. The core is machined square by a computer and verified square by a computer-controlled optical inspection system, which is capable of measuring angularity to 5 decimal places. The 1.6mm thick blade gets heat treated and tempered ensuring strength and stability. Finally, they're bead blasted to create a non-glare finish that contrasts nicely with the laser-engraved scales.

Like Woodpeckers Aluminium squares, the cheeks added to the central core are narrower, forming a shoulder that keeps your square registered to your stock even when you let go. You'll love using Woodpeckers new stainless-steel squares for lay out work. First, the scales are laser-engraved to a tolerance of ±.004". The thin blade puts the scale right next to your work, reducing parallax error. Woodpecker laser cut precisely-spaced scribing notches along the blade. Just drop a pencil into the notch of your choice and slide the square along the edge of your stock. With twin points for each notch, it doesn't matter whether you push or pull, you'll get a line perfectly parallel to the edge.

To aid machinery set up, Woodpecker laser engraved the end of the beam, as well as the edges. The squares stand upright without a hand, giving you both hands to dial in the height of your router bit, saw blade or dado stack. Also like Woodpeckers Aluminium squares, they stand behind these squares for the life of the tool. They’re guaranteed to be within ±.0085°. To put that in perspective, on the 1282SS, the maximum error you could find at the far end of the square would be about half the thickness of a human hair. If you ever find it outside that tolerance, they will fix it or replace it.

Great square, like most woodpeckers tools, well built for work and precision

Guaranteed accuracy when it’s needed.

We factory build (to the millimetre) high spec passive wooden buildings using engineered timber products. Mostly, 300mm roofer speed squares are used but these vary in their accuracy, good enough for some jobs but not for quality control. The quality/accuracy of this square compliments our own aims. Used to check other squares and for crucial marking out purposes. It’s just a shame that the cheeks limit this 300mm square to a useable 260mm, as we regularly use 300mm stock. I would have purchased the 450mm 1812SS had it been available, the 2616SS would be unwieldy in the same situations. Thanks to Wood Workers Workshop for supplying.

Another great square from Woodpeckers

Please read my review of the Woodpeckers 642SS square, all of my praise in that review applies to the 1282SS square as well, with the exception that it does not fit quite as nicely in the hand as it smaller brother. Since using both squares for a few weeks, I found the feature I have used most and love is the ability to use the horizontal scale (along the stock face) to enable me to mark a position from which I can then scribe a line across the workpiece that is a specific distance from another such line. When I purchased the square I thought my main love would be the ability to draw lines parallel to and at a specific distance from an edge, but it has turned out that the ability to draw lines perpendicular to the edge of a workpiece that are an exact specified distance apart that I actually use more. Love it.
