Description

Scary Sharp lapping film provides a quick cutting, long-lasting and very flat sharpening method. These aluminium oxide micro finishing sheets are easy to lay with a strong polyester film and pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) backing.

Sharp, heat-treated, P-grade Aluminium Oxide abrasives combined with zinc stearate anti-loading agent are uniformly coated onto a tough, tear-resistant self-adhesive film backing.

Originally designed for use in the demanding field of metalwork micro finishing, for the grinding of camshafts, they offer excellent results in hand sharpening. The abrasive cutting is quicker, lasts longer and is less prone to tearing during use compared to the original Imperial lapping films used for fibre-optic polishing.

It does work well

It does work well. I was originally using 10,000 grit wet and dry, but it’s hard to tell the difference between that and the really fine lapping paper. At least the lapping paper lasts a bit longer. Unfortunately I do have a tiny air bubble from when I stuck it to the plate.

Highly recommended

Easy to get set-up and use despite no prior experience of - videos at WWW helpful (other youtube videos also helpful). Successfully revived a 1970s Stanley #4 and sorted out some cheap chisels at first attempt. Highly recommended as are WWW. Nothing but good things to say about WWW.

Scary sharp Trial Pack = Very good!

Ordering, delivery, etc. easy and quick. Materials exactly as described and seem to work very well for the 'fine' end of "scary sharpening" after 'grinding' on coarse(r) media (wet & dry silicon carbide papers). I have all my abrasives on 10 or 20 mm thick float-glass. The finest (3 um / 8000 grit) sheet gives, as far as I can tell, as good a finish / polish (on a plane or chisel micro-bevel) as my 10,000 grit, Japanese water-stone... without the hassle of repeated and regular flattening of the water-stone. These sheets, cut into strips and stuck down to glass or similar, are much more convenient (and SO much cheaper!) than an 'equivalent' set of water-stones. The material sticks well to glass so should stick well-enough to other, flat materials. Highly recommended. I am in the process of comparing these sheets with a set of 3M Lapping Films, which I have just acquired, for final finishing / polishing of edges.

Scary Sharpening Abrasive Sheets (Trial Pack)

A good produce and certainly easy to use and produce great results.
You have to be careful with the finer grade of the sheets and only do movements in one direction otherwise you remove the surface. Recommend

Scary!

I haven't used any of these sheets yet, but I did try this method years ago when I was on one of Peter's courses at the furniture school, and was very impressed/amazed at what can be achieved using this method.
I usually use just sandpaper, then diamond stones progressing up to the 1000 grit. I have a cranked pairing chisel that I need to be 'scary sharp', and have found a nice flat thick piece of glass,so I thought I'd give this a go.

Works well.

The sheets are very good and easy to apply to the Perspex blocks.

You do have to decide whether you go for three widths that do not cover the length of block, or two that do but waste some of the sheet.

Best sharpening system

Simple but effective and excellent value

I purchased the Scary Sharpening set after attending a woodworking course run by Woodworkers Workshop where this system is used alongside a few Tormek machines. I had previously thought I was likely to buy a Tormek machine but was won over by the Scary system (which I bought along with a Veritas honing guide set) which is easy to use and costs (even with the honing guides) a fraction of the price of the Tormek.

It would probably be easier to do a full regrind with the Tormek but it only took me about 10 minutes to do a full regrind on a chisel with the Scary system. A plane blade regrind took not much longer.

I recommend it without hesitation.

Scary sharpening sheets

My order arrived in very good time. I used an old granite chopping board to affix the sheets, adhesive backing worked well and the sheets were easy to stick down without trapping air bubbles. I’ve been sharpening my own chisels and planes for over 30 years and I don’t think I’ve ever achieved a sharper edge than I did using this system. The only down side I found was that the sheets seemed to clog quite quickly. I would recommend giving this system a try if you’re looking for a cost effective way of getting a razor sharp edge on your tools.

Hi Neil.
Thank you for your review. We would recommend using the Scary Sharp Papers along with a good Honing fluid to keep the papers from clogging up too quickly. In our workshop we use the Shield Technology Honerite 1 fluid which we find works really well with the Scary Sharp system. We also recommend after using the Scary Sharp abrasives to use a magnet wrapped in paper to get as much swarf as possible out of the abrasive. This should extend the life of the Scary Sharp System before needing to swap the abrasive over. You can find both magnets and Shield Technology Honerite 1* on the website. (*Please Note Honerite 1 can only be shipped within the UK)

Kind Regards.

Only a trial pack but immediately bought the full version

Although this is only a trial pack it has the quality of these papers, I immediately jumped back on the website and purchased the full size.
The smaller the trial pack will be used for the tiny projects I have on the go and the larger will be cut.
If it's quality you're after these are the best for finishing and polishing producing a shine only usually produced by polishing. Give them a try you'll be pleasantly surprised and be going back again and again for more

Good value alternative to whetstones

Bought to use as a sort of starter pack for chisel and knife sharpening. Sticks very well to my perspex surface. Was expecting it to last longer but i was able to cut three sections from each sheet so still good value.

Scary sharpening!

Found this product exactly as described - I cut a piece from each grade to fit some steel gauge plates I had ready, the offcuts I affixed to a flat glass sheet by way of getting used to the product. With WD40 as a lubricant, I was very pleased with the result. Also I found the used sheets easy to peel off so that a fresh sheet or a finer grit could be affixed. Re-sharpened a chipped wood chisel easily and quickly. As efficient as diamond in my view and at a fraction of the cost.

Works like a charm

Especially considering their low price (as compared to bench stones) they work brilliantly. I put some 8mm float glass underneath to get a straight surface which resulted in a scary sharp edge (pun intended) using the "Cosman method" of free sharpening. Not in use for a very long time but the paper doesn't seem prone to tearing.

Very nice

Ive been using these sheets to mirror polish edges on my knife collection and they work extremely well

Great abrasive paper

Can easily cut to width to get muiltiple grits side by side on my honing surface. Working through the grits gets a great edge to my chisels

Excellent results

I am very pleased with my purchase. These sheets seem to last longer than expected. Yes, un-sticking them can be tricky, as they leave quite a lot of the adhesive and print from the sheet. However WD40, Isopropyl alcohol etc soon fixed that.

Added the final mirror edge to my plane blade. Would happily recommend.

Very easy to get your tools very sharp

I've used wet n dry in the past to sharpen chisels but this stuff is so much better. My tools have never been so sharp. It seems expensive for some sandpaper but it's really not since it lasts ages. Used with a good honing guide it's very easy - Recommended.
