Description

Block planes are every woodworker’s best friend. Primarily designed for shaving end grain, completing touch-ups and finish work, a block plane is the must have plane in your toolbox.

An uncomplicated plane

The Melbourne Tool Company Low Angle Block plane can plane any kind of wood yet remains an uncomplicated tool. The minimalistic design makes it easy to disassemble for maintenance and reassemble for work. The adjustment knobs and wheels are accessible and feature a very smooth action. The blades depth of cut is adjusted by simply turning the depth and lateral adjustment wheel. Slide the adjustment wheel side to side to skew the blade left and right.

12 degree bed

The blade is set bevel-up in the milled plane bed at 12 degrees providing you with a very low angle of attack. The blades fix down hard on the plane casting, so blade’s cutting edge is provided with maximum support no matter the workpiece.

3 angled blades available

The Low Angle Block is supplied with a blade sharpened to 25 degrees. Along with the 12 degree bed, you now have an effective cutting angle of 37 degrees, perfect for jobs like end grain. Also available are blades ground to 38 degrees suitable for smoothing, and 50 degrees for smoothing figured material.

M2 High Speed Steel blades

The M2 HSS (High Speed Steel) blade has high abrasion resistance which means it will hold a sharp edge much longer than many other steels. This also means that it may take a little longer to bring up an edge, very similar to A2 steel, but holds the edge longer than O1 steel.

Easy and precise depth and lateral blade adjustment

The Low Angle Block Plane features an easy to adjust, precise depth and lateral blade adjuster. Twist the knurled knob to set the depth of cut. Slide side to side to skew the blade within the plane mouth. The whole assembly comes apart easily for regular maintenance.

Adjustable mouth

The plane mouth is fully adjustable. Twist the front handle knob to release the toe. Use the mouth adjustment lever to set the mouth width opening to suit the work at hand. Close the mouth up tight to minimise tear out when working difficult figured materials.

Excellent plane

Excellent plane, I really love it, beautiful balanced, really worth the money. This is my 3rd Melbourne plane and I will certainly be adding more to the collection. 5* service from Woodwoorkers workshop too!

A great little plane excellent on end grain as well as normal grain

A great little plane excellent on end grain as well as normal grain. Not had great usage yet just trials on performance. I had to hone the edges of the adjustable mouth slide edges on my 1000 diamond grit. So it slides much better with no snagging. Also the blade adjuster, small wheel, could be have better grip grooves to turn it. More like the larger Brass one which puts pressure on the blade.

Very nicely manufactured tool

Very nicely manufactured tool.
Feels “fitted” in the hand and well finished with no sharp edges or burrs.
Depth adjustment seems positive with a well knurled knob.
Mine needed very little work out of the box and with a touch up on the stones it takes a very nice shaving.
If I have to have grumble it would be the about the mouth adjustment .
Not as smooth moving as it could have been.
But overall, for the money, it’s an excellent little plane that should give years of service.
I would certainly try another MTC product.
41/2 stars.

Fabulous plane

I wasn't sure how much I'd use this little plane but it's the one I've probably picked up most. Sole was nice and flat out of the box and a quick sharpen to put a secondary bevel on it took less than a minute. It holds its edge very well and cuts super cleanly. Usual excellent service from Peter and the team!

Impressed and delighted

Having bought the low-angle plane for myself at Christmas, and being highly impressed with them, I followed that purchase up by buying auxiliary blades of different angles for each plane. I'm now even more impressed and delighted with the flexibility this affords me. I just want to plane all day!

Looks and feels good

Didn't know about Melbourne Tool, was waiting for Quangsheng low angle block plane to come back in stock. So when Melbourne came to my notice, I liked what I saw and purchased. Haven't used it yet as it's freezing out in the workshop, but, just handling the new tool makes me think it will be a great acquisition. looking forward very much to getting started. Everything about it says good quality product.

Fully recommended

Having used my dad's Miller Falls block plane for many years, at the ripe old age of 78, I decided to treat myself to a new one. Being the old thrift guy I am, I chose the MTC low angle after hearing much discussion of it on podcasts I listen to. I use the mk2 from Lee valley for sharpening and found LeeValleys 25 degree sharpening angle to be significantly different from what the blade came. In the end , all was good, but it did take a bit of extra time to get back to ready to work.
Fully recommended. It's a pleasure for this old man to use this fine tool.

It wokred pretty well

I got this plane recently at a discount. I used it straight out of the box and it worked pretty well. The blade opening gap is not operating as smoothly as it should so I plan to do some fettling as it seems to be binding. All in all, not a bad plane for the money and quite heavy. I think it is a notch below Lie-Nielsen and Veritas but a good buy, especially if it is on sale.

Surprisingly good!

What struck me when I unboxed the block plane was the quality of the product. Solid, good looking and required minimal sharpening before use. The plane glides through wood and leaves a silky smooth surface.

It became my go to plane

The thing must always be considered with the price it comes.
I like this plane for how it sits in my hand, for its weight that adds some inertia when cutting, and for ease of blade adjustment. Every blade needs a touch up, even of the planes of the highest end - so it is essential and cannot be considered as the plane flaw. Once touched with fine stone and strap - it holds the edge nicely. One thing that caught my attention is the sharp edges of the plane body (casting itself is very good). But, in my opinion, I cannot remove a star for that, since it is minor issue for me and can be fixed easily.

Well-made tool

I would have to agree with a few other online reviews I have seen. The block plane is a well-made tool and the price is fair. The sole and blade needed just a bit of work, the front and back edges a bit more (rough casting) but then you have a tool that fits in the hand nicely and takes superb shavings. I don't know yet how durable the cutting edge is. It's not a Lie-Nielsen, but neither is the price.

High Quality Plane

As far as I can tell, MTC tools are of an extremely high quality, rivaling the more expensive brands at a knockdown price.
They are very accurately machined, well finished, and have a unique modern style.
The block plane can be taken almost completely apart (the exception is the slider for the mouth, which is riveted on), which is very helpful for deep cleaning.
Each part is robustly made - there are no flimsy or cheap components here.
I will be coming back to MTC for a cabinet scraper and some of their other planes soon!

it looks great

I got the Low angle block plane. This is the first plane I've ever purchased. So I don't feel qualified to do a review. It looks great and solid and I'm just learning how to use it and loving it. I used to be a sandpaper person now I'm a believer in planes. My next purchase would either be a low angle Jack plane for smoothing or get a Milwaukee power tool plane.

Melbourne Tool Company Low Angle Block Plane

This is a very handy small block plane, perfect for the job of knocking off the sharp edges on some new oak drawer handles I was making. Its size means that you can get into difficult angles easily. It seems to be well made and worked straight out of the box. The presentation box itself is sturdy enough to keep the plane in safely in the longer term. I would certainly consider this brand again when looking for a plane.
