Description

The Joseph Marples mortice and marking gauge is made from the finest solid wood, and comes complete with brass inlay strips, brass knurled thumbscrew, and combined mortice and marking pins. These gauges feature the standard 6mm distance between the pins when fully closed.

A mortice gauge is one of the furniture maker's most fundamental tools for accurate mortice and tenon setting out. This wood and brass mortice gauge feature a threaded fine screw adjuster and brass knurled thumbscrew for locking the pins in place and holding the stock in the correct position.

The Marples family started making marking tools in the 1840's and are still making in Sheffield today.

I’ve wanted a mortise gauge for months. Couldn’t find one. Then spotted one in a tool store and bought it. £12. But cheap. Opened it up & returned it to the store immediately. It was pathetic; block was loose on shaft, thumb slide was stiff & irregular for lower point. Awful. Spoke with local hardware store who said Marples is best but expensive. Went home, searched for Marples, bought it. Had it next day! What a difference!! Precision too. Used it many times already. How did I ever work (as a handyman) without it!! It’s beautiful.

Great traditional mortice gauge. The brass fastenings are machined and finished beautifully. Very accurate and the 4mm minimal addition is very handy indeed for those miniature details.
