Description

The Melbourne Tool Company Small Router Plane makes creating small inlays, rebates and trenches with perfectly flat bottoms a breeze. Created with an ergonomic form that is comfortable to use from a variety of angles. From small box hinges, intricate inlay work, or small-scale joinery, you can rely on the Melbourne Tool Company Small Router Plane to improve the accuracy of your work.

An uncomplicated plane

This Small Router Plane is a versatile yet uncomplicated tool. The minimalistic design makes it easy to disassemble for sharpening and maintenance and reassemble for work. The knurled fixing knobs are very accessible with a very smooth action. The blades depth of cut is adjusted by simply loosening the fixing knobs and sliding the blade into the required position.

50-degree straight blade

This router plane is different, unlike many other router planes, the blade is made from a straight square section of HSS steel set bevel-down in the plane at 50 degrees. The blade bevel is only present to relieve the cut, this provides you with a very effective angle of attack suitable for all types of trenching work, and a router plane that is extremely easy to sharpen.

Easy to sharpen

Because the blades are made from a single piece of straight steel, the blades are very easy to sharpen. Simply remove the blade from the plane body, sharpen like you would a mortise chisel and then reset. No special jigs or equipment required!

M2 High Speed Steel blades

The M2 HSS (High Speed Steel) blade has high abrasion resistance which means it will hold a sharp edge much longer than many other steels. This also means that it may take a little longer to bring up an edge, very similar to A2 steel, but holds the edge longer than O1 steel.

A range of blade widths

  • 1.0mm
  • 2.0mm
  • 3.0mm
  • 4.0mm

Great for tight corners

A very nice router plane for getting into the bottom and corners of small mortises. I think cutting into smaller recesses is where this tool really works over its larger counterparts. Especially in combination with the narrow blades such as the 1mm and 3mm I bought with the plane.

I was very pleased about how far the narrow smaller blades extend beyond the body bottom. In pictures it appeared that the wider shoulders of the main part of the blade might inhibit how far down into narrow openings the blade would reach, but the few times I've used the plane this hasn't been a problem.

The 45deg isn't a great hinderance to getting into slots, though I think there will be occassions when I'll need to grab an alternative tool to get into deep small mortises. The other side of that is that the angled iron does make sharpening so much easier.

Adjustment was easy with just some light taps with a small mallet allowing me to lower the blade for the next sequence of cuts: Get the blade near by hand and tighten the knobs; couple of taps to get the first cut; couple of taps for a deeper second cut; tap, tap again and slowly work the surface downward. Works a treat.

I particularly like the weight and feel in the hand. For such a small tool it really feels like it will make every cut that is needed. A much more solid feel to a Stanley 271 which shares a similar footprint. Where the Melbourne really excels over the 271 is when it is combined with a narrow blade. With that combination you can get a level of precision that it harder to acheive with a 271.

Love the style tool works well

I love the style and the tool works really well once the proper depth is set. However, that proves to be quite fidgety. The place has a tendency to side out of position before tightening.

It works great

I have used it to clean up the bottom of 1/4” x 5” mortises in oak created by a mortise machine. It works great!

The right size

I use this on small box mortises and it works great. I also got the 1/8 inch blade for knife hinges. It's well made, and after filing a few edges and sharpening the blade it works perfect for my needs!
