Peter Sefton's Complete Woodworking Course

The complete set of DVD's are well packaged and pleasing to the eye. The subject matter printed on the back is very clear and easy to see what each section is about.
The opening shot when playing is nicely laid out and easy to follow, Peter has a small piece about himself which explains to the viewer about Peter's journey through his cabinet making career, teaching and who he has worked with, which is very good if you don't know who Peter is.

The set contains 5 DVD's and they are on a single topic each.

Timber Selection
This DVD give a good picture of what to look for and issues that can be found, you also get to see this in action with Peter selecting various species of timber for a set project, looking and explaining the colour, defects and how best to maximise the usage of the timber and above all, when to reject timber. Peter also explains what equipment to take with you. It also highlights the dangers of a timber yard and what you should do and wear to protect yourself.

Timber Preparation
In this DVD, it is explained the difference you should expect to find with differing kinds of timber from English Hardwoods and Exotic Hardwoods and everything inbetween. We look at veneers too which was very informative. It loos at how grain direction can be an issue and how to overcome it.

Chisel and Plane Grinding
Peter looks at and explains different ways to grind and getting the maximum performance from the cutting tools and what happens if it goes wrong. It also looks at different types of grinding wheel from 6 inch grinder to a Tormek and the pros and cons.

Chisel and Plane Sharpening
Peters here looks at the multitude ways of sharpening from oil stones right the way up to scary sharp, talks about honing guides and jigs and the pitfalls if used incorrectly. There is honest explanations of each type of sharpening demonstrated by Peter.

Selecting and Using Handplanes
2 part DVD, fantastic information on how to set them up and how to use ...

The crucial thing about any training video is the imparted knowledge. Peter takes you through the process of sharpening chisels and planes, explains the different types of stones and films that you can use to do so. There's a nice section on testing how sharp your chisel is without having to shave your arm and how to check your plane by looking at the shavings generated. The video is split into seven sections, the first five are background and introductory information, such as how to go about flattening chisel backs. The last two cover the sharpening, chisel first then plane..

I really liked the explanation of the chisel steels what sort of prices you'd pay for the different types and the pros and cons of each with a good explanation of the benefit of flat lands for nice, tidy dovetail work. There's a good emphasis on getting consistency with your sharpening regardless of the system you use and there's no pressure to upgrade to expensive equipment. Indeed in the summary Peter says "All of these systems work, the main thing is to get a system and work with it...".

The production values are great both the video and audio are clear with copious use of close up shots where required. Presentation feels like a one to one lesson rather than being "talked at" and there's a nice bit of history thrown in at various stages.

You can see quite clearly from the pictures attached that watching this DVD has improved my chisels from the abomination in the first to something so much better in the last two.

Top quality very professional and very well presented by Peter Sefton. These are amazing for the amount of detail that Peter go's into without making it complicated. You will learn so much from these if you are new to woodworking, if you are an experienced woodworker and just love watching DVD's on the subject they are a great buy.

It doesn't matter how much that you think you know,these DVDs will ensure that you get better results more safely and extend the range of options that you can use your machines for. Genuinely excellent in presentation, sound and material.

He is a very well put together videos but for the style of woodworking that I do I didn’t find the second and third video very helpful at all but the first video is fantastic in the set.
I wish that there was more detail put into cutting from logs

These DVD's are really helpfull in understanding the setup of the bandsaw in order to get the most from it and in helping with my decision of what bandsaw to buy. Peter clearly explained in detail what the bandsaw is capable of doing and how to use it to really deliver. The jigs he described and explained were also very good and I also picked up other good information along the way, Peters emphasis on properly prepared and sized timber made me realise why some of my joints did not fit snug and as a result I have also brought the four DVD's on thickness planers and jointers.

I found it to be extremely interesting, clear and informative. I wish I had a bandsaw like Peter’s!

I enjoyed it and I felt it was an excellent description of how to set up a band saw. I however was hoping that Peter would have taken up the problem of checking that the 3 roller guides are passed their sell by dates or not.

These three videos contain a wealth of information about the flexible machine that is the bandsaw. Setup, techniques and safety are all covered in depth, as are advanced techniques. I started to think about certain operations differently, such as re-sawing, in terms of tooth pitch. Peter is a great teacher and I tip my hat off to him for producing these videos - I am looking forward to getting and watching the others. Peter has a great didactic style which other woodworking teachers would be wise to follow. He goes to extraordinary length to explain things, which means that nothing is left to chance misunderstanding - everything is explained very clearly. The quality of the photography is also very good indeed so it is very cleat what is happening.

There is such a wealth of knowledge and advice in these videos . For anyone starting to use a jointer/planer these are essential viewing and should be supplied with the machine! Peter Sefton is an admirable teacher.

After watching this video several times and reading what other reviewers say I find I am lost for words! One cannot say more in praise of Peter and his coverage of the subject, This tutorial was so badly needed especially to give confidence to those without experience and in need of a wise mentor.

Another excellent DVD from Peter. It contains so much essential fundamental practise delivered with great clarity. As with other DVD's in this collection it is comprehensive and eminently worth revisiting time and again

As a hobby woodworker I have long been mystified by the complexity of hand planes available. This dvd is extremely informative and I believe a very necessary prerequisite to watch (as a virtual innocent) before spending money on planes to add to your collection.

Excellent series on band saw and jointer. Very fine made and excellent teaching skills. All importan aspectes covered with great skill and professionalism. A must have seen.

These DVD's are compulsive viewing. The meticulous progression through all operations make these DVD's a must have for any band saw owner. The clarity of Peter's presentation is a revelation to anyone like me who endeavours on his own and has no expert on hand to refer to. An exceedingly worthwhile investment that will long continue to pay dividends
