Description

Success in the workshop depends on careful machinery set up, accurate layout and consistently checking your work during assembly. All three jobs call for a quality square, and here is the one that established Woodpeckers as a premier layout tool manufacturer, the 1281 Precision Woodworking Square. What separates Woodpeckers squares from the rest is our one-piece central core, milled from the most stable aluminum plate made in the world. The central core gives the 1281 an accuracy and stability rarely found in competitive tools.

The core of the 1281 is a precisely machined square milled from cast and ground tool plate, the most stable aluminium in the world. The stability of the material and the methods Woodpeckers use to machine the core allow them to hold tolerance to ± 0.0085°, that’s within one thousandth of an inch at the far end of the 300mm blade. To this highly accurate core, Woodpecker add cheeks to make the base thicker. The combination of the one-piece core with the precision-pinned cheeks can’t be matched by squares made with a blade riveted to a separate beam.

The cheeks are narrower than the core, forming a shoulder not found in traditional square designs. The shoulder allows the square to rest on the edge of a board without you holding on. Once you’ve used a Woodpeckers square with the shoulder, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

The hands-free design, the wide stable base for vertical use and the heft and balance of the 1281 combine to make the tool a joy to use, as well as deadly accurate. But Woodpeckers didn’t stop with just a great square, they laser engrave scales on both sides of the blade to an accuracy of ± 0.1mm (0.004") total accumulated error over the entire length of the scale.

When not in use, your 1281 stores on a wall-mountable Rack-It that keeps your square safe, but always in plain sight and ready for the next project.

So it’s as stated - a true square , I thought about this purchase as there are other quality options by other makers but once it’s in your hand it feels right . Ive a few woodpecker tools and they don’t disappoint. My 1281 square arrived in good time and in perfect condition. I’d recommend to others who don’t mind spending good money on a quality tool..

Expensive but good

Previously used a Fisher engineering square of the same size. I found it quite heavy and awkward to use for woodworking. So, after much thought, I bit the bullet and bought the woodpecker square. No getting away from it , it’s expensive. But for woodworking, it’s far superior . It sits on the wood unaided. It’s light and the wider blade and red colour make it easier to judge whether something is square. Since bought the smaller version.

Nice but finish isn’t great

The level is lovely to use is square but I have to admit the finish of the red paint I don’t think it’s up to the price that is asking for

Expensive but worth it

Like others, I have been debating whether to go for it as it is most definitely expensive. But for the price you do get a very accurate square, one you can trust. I use it to square up an MFT table. Now I have perfect square cuts every time. A premium product and in my humble opinion well worth it as it saves you time and gives you confidence in your builds.
