Description

The Melbourne Tool Company Large Router Plane makes creating rebates and trenches with perfectly flat bottoms a breeze. Created with an ergonomic form that is comfortable to use from a variety of angles. Whether you are creating grooves, dadoes, rebates or any other joinery recess, you can rely on the Melbourne Tool Company Large Router Plane to improve the accuracy of your work.

An uncomplicated plane

This Large Router Plane is a versatile yet uncomplicated tool. The minimalistic design makes it easy to disassemble for sharpening and maintenance and reassemble for work. The knurled fixing knobs are very accessible with a very smooth action. The blades depth of cut is adjusted by simply loosening the fixing knobs and sliding the blade into the required position.

50-degree straight blade

This router plane is different, unlike many other router planes, the blade is made from a straight square section of HSS steel set bevel-down in the plane at 50 degrees. The blade bevel is only present to relieve the cut, this provides you with a very effective angle of attack suitable for all types of trenching work, and a router plane that is extremely easy to sharpen.

Easy to sharpen

Because the blades are made from a single piece of straight steel, the blades are very easy to sharpen. Simply remove the blade from the plane body, sharpen like you would a mortise chisel and then reset. No special jigs or equipment required!

M2 High Speed Steel blades

The M2 HSS (High Speed Steel) blade has high abrasion resistance which means it will hold a sharp edge much longer than many other steels. This also means that it may take a little longer to bring up an edge, very similar to A2 steel, but holds the edge longer than O1 steel.

A range of blade widths

Your Melbourne Tool Company Large Router Plane is supplied with a 12.7mm wide. Additional blades are available in these widths:

  • 3.0mm
  • 6.0mm
  • 8.0mm
  • 10.0mm
  • 12.0mm

Great piece of kit

I debated over getting the router plane as I wasn't sure how much I'd actually use it.... and I haven't reached for my plunge router since! It's a dream to use, very easy to sharpen and seems to hold an edge for ages. Have used it on cherry and maple so far and it's worked flawlessly. Great service from WWW as usual!

Great tool for the price

I have a total of about 6 hours using the tool so far. Mostly with Ash, Mahogany and Cherry.

Cons: No major flaws. Tension on the blade can cause the adjustment knob to slip out of the blade, so be aware of that. No real easy way to ID how much you're turning the adjustment knob (unless your eyes are good enough to watch the knurling), so I just gave it a little dot with a sharpie. Sole needed slight lapping, but not much.

Pros: Feels good in the hands. Heavy, and the handles are nice and large. Straight blade was easier to sharpen than the L-shaped blades some other router planes use. Took less than a few minutes to sharpen well. Cuts cleanly, leaves no marks or burnishing. Great tool for the price point. I'll probably get more Melbourne planes in the future.

This is a joy to use

I've never used a router plane before and this is a joy to use. I started by sharpening the blade, which wasn't too difficult as it's just a square bit of steel, and then used it instead of my Bosch router to cut some dados. It took some trial and error but after an hour or two of practice I got the hang of it. Really like this tool.

Excellent Service

"The technical support and customer service I’ve received has been truly exceptional - world class and especially nice given it’s a rarity these days."
