Description

The Melbourne Tool Company Low Angle Smoothing Plane is the must have fine finishing hand tool to have on your bench. Its shorter body makes this plane perfect for finishing wooden surfaces. It produces a finish that equals or is superior to that made by fine sandpaper.

An uncomplicated plane

The Melbourne Tool Company Low Angle Smoothing Plane can plane any kind of wood yet remains an uncomplicated tool. The minimalistic design makes it easy to disassemble for maintenance and reassemble for work. The adjustment knobs and wheels are accessible and feature a very smooth action. The blades depth of cut is adjusted by simply turning the depth and lateral adjustment wheel. Slide the adjustment wheel side to side to skew the blade left and right.

12 degree bed

The blade is set bevel-up in the milled plane bed at 12 degrees providing you with a very low angle of attack. The blades fix down hard on the plane casting, so blade’s cutting edge is provided with maximum support no matter the workpiece.

3 angled blades available

The Low Angle Smoothing Plane is supplied with a blade sharpened to 25 degrees. Along with the 12 degree bed, you now have an effective cutting angle of 37 degrees, perfect for jobs like end grain. Also available are blades ground to 38 degrees suitable for smoothing, and 50 degrees for smoothing figured material.

M2 High Speed Steel blades

The M2 HSS (High Speed Steel) blade has high abrasion resistance which means it will hold a sharp edge much longer than many other steels. This also means that it may take a little longer to bring up an edge, very similar to A2 steel, but holds the edge longer than O1 steel.

Easy and precise depth and lateral blade adjustment

The Low Angle Smoothing Plane features an easy to adjust, precise depth and lateral blade adjuster. Twist the knurled knob to set the depth of cut. Slide side to side to skew the blade within the plane mouth. The whole assembly comes apart easily for regular maintenance.

Adjustable mouth

The plane mouth is fully adjustable. Twist the front handle knob to release the toe. Use the mouth adjustment lever to set the mouth width opening to suit the work at hand. Close the mouth up tight to minimise tear out when working difficult figured materials.

Love them

Love them, my wife bought the smoother with additional blades. Great quality and feels good in the hand, very comfortable!

I think I will like the plane

I think I will like the plane. I have not used it yet but I did spend over one hour working on the blade with more work yet to do. the blade had grind marks across the blade and the back was very rough. So much for a little final touch up.

Blade impossible to flatten

Back of blade was impossible to flatten. There was a sharp burr on both side edges that almost cut me when I first handled it. Mouth adjuster does not move smoothly.

MTC smoother is superb

I'm delighted with this little low angle smoother. I can't fault it. The feel is lovely and I like the good quality unpainted cast iron finish. Adding the 50⁰ blade really makes a difference when preventing tear-out. It works really well.

Great Plane

I have really enjoyed using this plane. I have owned a low angle jack plane for about two years now and liked the ease of use with it. I thought I would give this one a try and it has become a great addition to my plane collection. I love the size of the adjuster knob and the size of the front tote. I think my next purchase will be a spoke shave but I may opt for the block plane. This is a great company that doesn't kill the budget of a novice woodworker. It is also nice that the quality far exceeds the price.

Excellent tool. Well made

Excellent tool. Well made, and after tuning (minimal) it worked perfectly. Highly recommended. And I own a number of Lie-Nielsen planes I love. Good value.

Love this plane! Large handles

Love this plane! Large handles make it easy to hold. The weight is perfect. It cuts like a dream. Nice thick iron will last a very long time. Great plane for the money. Saving up to buy some more.

Nice plane. Cuts really well right out of the box. Throat adjustment is a little sticky.

Sublime!

I've restored & frequently used 5 different vintage Stanley Bailey hand planes over the last 6yrs. It's been 6 months since I started using this Low Angle Smoother and now the Stanley's gather dust. I have used this plane on pine, teak, oak & merbau with exceptional results. Fits great in my small chunky arthritic hands and is my go-to for just about every job. Would definitely recommend for beginner or expert.

I would give it a good rating

I would give it a good rating: heavy casting, smooth adjustment, good handles. A well conceived tool that has been made to a high standard. Well done. Anything else I should look at?

Wonderful!

Wonderful plane, even straight out of the box before any additional sharpening, it took beautiful paper-thin cuts off end-grain hard maple. Feels very comfortable and balanced in the hands.

Needed few minutes flattening

Blade needed a few minutes of flattening on the back. After a quick sharpen & honing I put it to work with very pleasant results. This plane is comfortable in my medium size hands & it has performed better than I expected. If this plane was lost or stolen I would purchase another one to replace it as soon as possible.

It feels so damn sturdy.

It feels so damn sturdy. I enjoy the process of picking the right angled blade for the job because of how easy it is to switch. Any time I've used it I don't need to sand afterwards at all. And I find myself looking for more excuses to use it.
