by iGaging

These digital readout kits (DRO) can be adapted to any number of woodworking and metalworking machines such as router lifts, spindle moulders, planers, table saws or milling machines, metal lathes etc., allowing conversion to digital readout thus ensuring precise and reputable adjustments.

They have a crystal clear large remote LCD display connected with a 1930mm cord that can be disconnected for easy installation and access.

The large, easy to read display reads metric in 0.01mm increments as well as decimalised and fractional imperial in 1/32in, 1/64in or 1/128in increments 120".  The readout can be easily installed using magnets, double face tape, or screws. Vertical mounting hardware is included.

Installation on Mafell AD160

I have fitted this unit to my Mafell AD160 planer/thicknesser on the thicknesser part. I have included a link to a Dropbox folder containing photos of the installation.
The DRO unit looks well made and functions well. The ease of adjustment depends on the smoothness of the mechanism driving it, mine has a chain drive and can be a bit sticky in places.
The measuring sensor and aluminium track can be used in two ways, the sensor moves and the track is stationary, or the track moves and the sensor is stationary. If the sensor moves, as in my case, you have to consider strain on its cable and build in some flexibility. The aluminium track can be cut to length to fit your machine.
The Preset function is very useful as it allows a fixed measurement to be added to the zero setting. On the thicknesser the moving table is prevented from hitting the blades by a fixed stop. If you set zero at the fixed stop the distance from the stop to the blades is not included. This distance can be measured and added using the Preset function.
The other useful function is setting an Increment Zero (INC). This removes the need for calculations when you want to move the machine a small amount from where you are on the scale. The true position is displayed when the increment zero is removed
The instructions supplied are a typical Chinese/English effort and are not very easy to follow when new to this sort of equipment.
