As a complete beginner I found this video extremely useful, puts you on the right path...
Peter describes the methods of grinding from the earlier hand powered large diameter stone, through the various proprietary systems blades of various grades. Of course the very earliest method was sand on a flat (ish) stone - how things have changed.
The various processes and their advantages and disadvantages are eloquently discussed with Peter describing his current method he, and his students now use. The use of scary sharpening for grinding will overlap with final sharpening will overlap with final sharpening. This grinding dvd is very good with lots of information for the woodworker.
