Joseph Marples - Mortice Gauge
A fine Joseph Marples mortice gauge made exclusively for us with 4mm spacing between the pins (usually 6mm)
This mortice and marking gauge is made from the finest solid wood, and comes complete with brass inlay strips, brass knurled thumbscrew, and combined mortice and marking pins. The gauges are being made exclusively for Peter by Tony Marples, the grandson of Joseph Marples; the Marples family started making marking tools in the 1840's and are still making in Sheffield today.
Peter's mortice gauge is based on an early Marples design with 4mm between the pins and it is now been produced for Peter. A mortice gauge is one of the furniture maker's most fundamental tools for accurate mortice and tenon setting out. This wood and brass mortice gauge features a threaded fine screw adjuster and brass knurled thumbscrew for locking the pins in place and holding the stock in the correct position. The difference here is that standard mortice gauges are normally made with 6mm or 1/4" between the pins, which isn't fine enough for fine furniture work.
