A critical part of woodworking is of course the wood but we rarely see concise information on the selection of timber itself. Peter has created such a source in this video and you can tell he is tapping into his 35 years of experience as a furniture maker.
The species covered are extensive from domestic timbers available in Europe and the Americas to tropical exotics and veneers. Each is covered in detail including characteristics, uses and relative cost.
Moisture control and defects are explained clearly. This is of particular importance these days where stock is much more expensive. Peter explains not only what to avoid but where defects rejected by others can be suitable for cabinetmaking and can often be had at bargain prices.
Once wood is selected from a timber yard, Peter advises how to store it at your workshop until it is ready to use, allowing you to get the most from your expensive stock.
I make tools not furniture yet I learnt a huge amount from his video but if furniture making is your business or hobby then I would say this DVD alone will save you the cost of admission merely by avoiding the pitfalls resulting from poor timber selection and storage. If the remaining DVDs in this series are of equal calibre then I can look forward to further extending my knowledge of Unplugged Woodworking.
Ive learned so much from Peter talking through the different species and what they are best used for. Seeing the selection process is a huge help for me. When I have bought boards I just take what's available. Now that I know what I should be looking for, I'll save a lot of time and money. Peter really goes over what to look out for and what to avoid. He also shows what can be very desirable which is very useful information indeed. The drying process and moisture levels have always been confusing to be but not now. Peter makes it very easy to understand and gives some great guides to work to.
Full of detailed and helpful information. Covers in real detail timber and its properties. I found this full of really useful information which will be great for selecting my next hardwood purchase. Watching individual boards being selected by Peter from the timber yard and his explanations for why he picks or rejects that particular board gives great info for making the right purchase and getting the best and most suitable boards for a furniture project .
Enjoyable and informative watching, I would suggest to any new woodworker as a great source of information.
