WoodRiver No 6 Fore Plane V3

by WoodRiver

The No. 6, also called a 'fore' hand plane is good for jointing edges and flattening and smoothing large surfaces, such as table tops, panels and workbench tops, where you might not want or need the length or weight of a larger plane.

The extra length and width of the sole enables it to shave bumps and bridge valleys 7/8" wide better than a shorter plane. Weighing in at a stout 7-3/4 lbs, this plane's additional heft makes it easier for you to shave difficult stock without breaking a sweat.

The V3: Like previous WoodRiver® Bench Hand Planes is based on the reliable Bedrock design and feature heavy, stress-relieved ductile iron castings, fully machined adjustable Bedrock frogs and T10 blades. WoodRiver have changed the shape of the rear handle and increased the diameter of the blade adjustment wheel to make advancing the blade a bit easier. We improved the lateral adjustment lever and added a traditional style bearing for better control of the blade. They have made numerous changes to the castings that result in better ?feedback? and a solid feel to the user. Working closely with their own manufacturer, they have continued to make improvements in machining, finish and functionality which we feel have yielded hand planes that are meant to be used and offer an extraordinary value.

  • 2-7/8" W x 17-3/4"L with 2-3/8"W blade
  • Modelled after the Bedrocks, Stanley Tool's very best line
  • WoodRiver hand planes feature the same heavy castings (7-3/4 lbs) and fully machined frogs
  • Lightly finished Bubinga handles provide comfort and control
  • Tools require minimal tune-up prior to use
  • Commonly known as a "fore" plane
  • Soles and sides are machined flat and square within tightly held tolerances

    Wood river no 6 plane

Great plane just needed cleaned of oil protection, honed the cutter tightened tote screws adjusted frog ready to work.A pleasure to use.

    Good, solid plane

The no 6 arrived very well packed by the people of wood workers workshop. The plane itself doesn't need much work: wipe off the protective oil, thighten the tote, file the edges and it is ready to go. The iron didn't take a shaving right out of the box. This however is not a problem at all, since you need to flatten the back of the iron anyway. After flattening and sharpening, the plane took see through shavings. The lateral adjuster and depth adjuster work great: the blade is easily adjusted: onion skin shavings without having to retract or avances the blade a nummer of times. The plane feels solid in use and you can even hear the difference when you are planing: a (much cheaper) thin iron plane with a bailey type frog is much 'noisier' in my experience than this bedrock plane with a thick iron. This translates into very nice, even shavings. I 've been using it for 2 weeks now. Good plane, nice looking plane too.

Excellent Plane at a good price

This was my first WoodRiver plane and was attracted by good reviews and a very competitive price.

My other planes are Lie Nielsen and Clifton, so I am comparing with perhaps the best if not way more expensive, and the WoodRiver no6 came out very well indeed. The blade needed just a light honing and the whole plane was good to go straight out of the box.

A lot of slack on the adjuster, and I understand this is normal for a Woodriver, however I soon got used to compensating so no problem. The adjustment is nice and smooth and helped by a M6 thread rather than the coarser 1/4"-20 used by most others, so setting depth of cut is easy.

The weight of the plane is high and the grips comfortable, making flattening easy as you can get some momentum going. Since purchase two weeks ago I'fe jointed and flattened about 20 metres of oak panels and only had to re-hone once with a light strop.

Based on this experience I just ordered a Woodriver shoulder plane.

    Really nice.

Not much to say other than it is a quality product, exhibiting fine workmanship and at a great price. It is such a pleasure to use too, all that was advertised. I do have a No.6 by another brand and really there is no comparison, WoodRiver wins hands down.

    Plane sailing

Got myself a woodriver No6 and loving it a step up from my old stanley 5 and 41/2 in build quality nice heavy blade just a few minutes tweaking ...........putting an edge on the blade cleaning oil from the plane used in transport and filing the toe and heel of the sole to remove the sharp edge .....took under 10 minutes to get planing from opening the box
