The WoodRiver V3 line of hand planes is based on the reliable Stanley Bedrock design featuring heavy, stress-relieved ductile iron castings, fully machined adjustable frogs and T10 steel blades.

The planes represent a live, evolving product line that incorporates input from users, experts and the manufacturer to produce the best working planes possible.

The WoodRiver V3 No. 4-1/2 Bench Hand Plane is 2-7/8" wide, 10-3/8" long, has a 2-3/8" blade, and weighs just over 6 lbs. Commonly referred to as a Heavy Smoothing Plane, the No. 4-1/2 offers the user more heft, size and a larger handle than a traditional No. 4. Features include soles and side machined flat and square, lightly finished Bubinga handles, and minimal tune-up required before use.

  • 2-7/8" wide x 10-3/8" long with a 2-3/8" wide blade
  • Modeled after the Bedrocks, Stanley Tool?s very best line
  • Features fine-grained ductile iron castings and fully machined frogs

      A Christmas gift

The Wood River smoothing plane was on my son's Christmas list. It arrived promptly and was well packaged. He is very pleased with it but has not used it yet. It was very heavy and looked well made to me. I hope he will be able to use it for years.

      Just a little disappointed

The plane arrived on time, well packaged, unfortunately with a 8mm rust spot on the sole. This sanded out (mostly), but spoiled things a bit for me. A heavy plane, very comfortable to use, seems to be well manufactured. Once set up it is a pleasure to use. Shame about the rust though.

      Truly minimal set-up

Well I watched the Rob Cosman box opening and set-up youtube video and I have to say that my experience was very similar. I have not had an easier set up on a plane-iron - ever. I had it flattened and honed in well under a minute! The back of the iron had a perfect degree of concavity, it was flat across the edge and produced see-through shavings on hard maple straight off. The longest part of the set-up was cleaning off the oil! I was absolutely delighted with it. The rest of the fit and finish was also excellent and puts my only other 'premium' plane - a Clifton #5 to shame (that was a shambles in comparison). It is excellent value for money, oh and the dispatch/delivery speed was also excellent. Now the WoodRiver #7 is on my shopping list!

Very good but needed slight fettling

This is a hefty plane, well packaged and protected with an oily film. The blade is ground to 25 degrees. The plane was cleaned and reassembled and I honed the blade using scary sharpening system. Initially the plane only planed in a straight line and planing skewed was not possible. A straight edge showed very slight concavity on the width of the sole. This was very easily corrected on an abrasive plate and I can only assume that the casting must have moved or originally been machined without the tension of an installed frog and blade. Once corrected the plane performs beautifully. It feels as solid as a rock with no sensation of chatter. It planes happily with any degree of skew. The blade is thick and heavy and sharpens well. There was a slight concavity on the back of the blade which allows easy polishing prior to sharpening. This is a great addition to my workshop.
