Slightly longer than a block plane, the handle makes it more comfortable for extended use.

Slightly smaller and lighter than the No 4, this hand plane is well suited for smoothing smaller surfaces, or maneuvering around troublesome grain. Like the previous WoodRiver Bench Hand Planes, our version 3 is based on the reliable Bedrock design and feature heavy, stress-relieved ductile iron castings, fully machined adjustable frogs and T10 blades. WoodRiver have changed the shape of the rear handle and increased the diameter of the blade adjustment wheel to make advancing the blade a bit easier. They have improved the lateral adjustment lever and added a traditional style bearing for better control of the blade and made numerous changes to the castings that result in better "feedback" and a solid feel to the user. Working closely with their own manufacturer, they have continued to make improvements in machining, finish and functionality which we feel have yielded hand planes that are meant to be used and offer an extraordinary value.

  • Lightly finished Bubinga handles provide comfort and control

  • Partners perfectly with the longer No. 5
  • Commonly known as a smoothing plane

      #3 Hand plane

The plane generally functions good apart from the following points that should be addressed with very much better quality control and also a small modification to the frog to make the side casting of the frog 3mm instead of 2mm.
      1. The casting of the body has very inconsistent wall thicknesses as can be seen on the pictures. one side is 2mm and the other side is 3mm in most places. This varies from side to side along the plane body
      2. The body casting has a flat part where the handle fits on so that it protrudes over the end with potential for the handle to splinter off.
      3. Both sides were approx 0,15mm out of square with the sole. Both sides were also not parallel to one another.
      4. The adjusting yoke has ears that are below the centre of the adjusting wheel. It also needs to have the width made to fit the blade slot tighter so that the adjusting wheel has less play.
I would not have bought it, had I known it was like this. I appreciate that it is aimed at being used and should not compete with Lie Nielsen but I would prefer to pay maybe 20 or 30 dollars more to have at least a plane body which is fairly symmetrical with regards to the casting.
